USDA Organic Cost Share is Back - Submit Your Application by December 31, 2026!

Karlin Warner Karlin Warner

Last week the USDA announced that it is again helping organic producers and handlers cover certification costs through the Organic Certification Cost Share Program (OCCSP). This cost-share assistance provides reimbursement to certified operations for the costs of obtaining and/or maintaining organic certification. Certified organic operations are eligible for up to 75% of certification costs, up to a maximum of $750 per scope certified under the National Organic Program (including crops, wild crops, livestock, and handling).

Applications are now open, and the deadline for applying for the 2025 and 2026 cost share is December 31, 2026. Applications and payments are handled through the Farm Service Agency (FSA) on a first-come, first-served basis, so producers are highly encouraged to plan ahead and submit their materials early.

To ensure a successful application, operations should complete the following steps:

  • Provide a copy of the invoice marked “paid” as evidence of certification fees or expenses (such as inspection fees, application fees, and state program fees) incurred during the applicable program year.

  • Provide a copy of your current organic certificate. New clients must achieve certification before September 30th of a given year to qualify for cost share within that same fiscal year. For renewing clients, note that the most current certificate remains valid until suspended, surrendered, or revoked, even if it was issued in a prior calendar year.

  • Contact your local FSA county office or State Agency to fill out and submit the required application form.

A timely, complete submission ensures you receive the reimbursement you’re eligible for and helps avoid delays during FSA’s review process.
